Segment 1

  • Renovate Ludlow to accommodate expanded PreK program
  • Renovate and expand Woodbury as a Middle Years Building (Grades 6-8)
  • Renovate Boulevard, Lomond, Mercer and Onaway and convert elementary school buildings to include Grade 5

FORWARD TOGETHER

The creation of a Long-Term Master Facilities Plan is part of the Forward Together initiative, a collaborative planning process launched in 2019 by the City of Shaker Heights, Shaker Heights Public Library and the Shaker Heights City School District. It focuses on continuing to develop a shared vision for our community facilities, defined not only as physical buildings, but also amenities such as scheduling software and multi-generational programing.

How is the District handling the decisions and work

required for the transitions in Segment 1?

The District has created two dedicated working groups, one focused on Grades K-5 and one focused on Grades 6-8. These groups are composed of a variety of faculty and staff so that all aspects of the student and staff experience may be considered and represented. These working groups are examining space, curriculum, scheduling and more. The District is also collaborating with several stakeholder groups, such as various bargaining groups, the Facilities Advisory Committee, the PTO and others.

What celebrations will there be for current fourth grade students? Will they still have Clap Out?

Plans are underway for end-of-year celebrations. While these celebrations may look different than the Clap Outs that students experienced in the past, the elementary schools are looking forward to celebrating the fourth grade students’ return to the school for one more year! Clap Outs will become a tradition for fifth grade students, making this student cohort the very first class of fifth graders to be clapped out of their elementary school!

How will Grade 5 fit at the elementary buildings?

A full assessment of all spaces has been completed for all five elementary school buildings. The K-5 working group is currently working with building administrators to examine the space requirements for fifth grade classrooms and the impact on other spaces in the building. Space recommendations are expected to be made by the end of March.

How will the fifth grade curriculum be impacted

by the transition to K-5 buildings?

Fifth grade will move from the Middle Years Programme (MYP) to the Primary Years Programme (PYP), which aligns with the design of the International Baccalaureate Programme. Fifth grade classrooms will remain a departmentalized model during the transition, meaning each core teacher will teach 1-2 subjects as part of a teaching team. Fifth grade teachers will have collaborative planning time to build connections between the subjects similar to the current model of PreK-4. The District is considering licensure when planning for staff placement to allow for the ability to change and evolve the fifth grade classroom model in the coming years, should the interest exist to transition fifth grade to more closely align to the elementary Primary Years Programme general education classroom staffing model.

What are modular units?

Modular units are temporary learning spaces often utilized during construction projects. These are fully equipped classrooms with HVAC, technology, desks and space for students to learn comfortably year-round. Depending on location, modular units may also have fully plumbed restrooms. Currently, the plan is to utilize modular classrooms at the Middle School site throughout the duration of Segment 1. Considerations are being taken into account for security, comfort, accessibility, student transitions and more.
